The Lensbury, England's Home for Euro 2022
Proud hosts to the Lionesses, UEFA Women's EURO 2022 Champions
We were delighted to officially announce that The Lensbury Resort was chosen as England’s home for the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 campaign.
The team at The Lensbury are immensely proud to have been chosen, excited to support and cheer on the Lionesses on during the tournament on home soil.
Speaking of the decision, England head coach, Sarina Wiegman felt The Lensbury provided the best possible location for England to prepare for their challenge of taking on Europe’s top teams in July.
Wiegman said: “We are looking forward to our stay at The Lensbury. We have received a warm welcome from the staff already and have been impressed by the facilities and accommodation.
“It is important that our tournament base is a home from home for the squad and support team, and I have no doubt we will find that here. Confirming our base is another step towards what we all hope will be a memorable summer.”
Managing Director of The Lensbury Resort, Julie Hammond said “The team and I are incredibly proud that The Lensbury Resort has been chosen as the dedicated training base for the England National Football team during the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 tournament this July. I personally am truly excited be a part of the long-overdue rise in interest and associated participation in women’s elite sports and look forward to this excitement continuing to rise during the tournament this summer.
We are very much looking forward to playing our small part and to cheering on the Lionesses throughout the tournament this summer!”
The Lionesses spent much of June at the national football centre in St. George’s Park, Staffordshire in the lead-up to their opening 1-0 win over Austria at Old Trafford on 6 July, before heading south to their new home at The Lensbury.
The decision helps to further cement The Lensbury’s reputation as one of the leading residential elite sports venues in the UK, this is due to our investment in elite level sporting facilities including UEFA standard pitches, a state-of-the art elite gym and swimming pool.
The Lensbury was a well placed base for England ahead of their trip down to the Brighton Community Stadium on 11 July which saw a resounding 8-0 victory over Norway, before following it up with a brilliant 5-0 win over Northern Ireland at St. Mary’s, Southampton on 15 July. A tough fixture against Spain awaited the Lionesses in the quarter finals, going all the way to extra time but the team dug deep for a 2-1 victory at the Brighton Community Stadium. Returning back to The Lensbury, England hit a new lease of life and stunned Sweden with an emphatic 4-0 semi-final result at Bramall Lane in Sheffield. The final awaited the Lionesses, with a difficult match up against Germany. Despite trailing for much of the second half, a late equaliser and a Kelly winner in extra time saw England crowned UEFA Women EURO’s 2022 Champions!
The team returned to the Lensbury following their victory at Wembley Stadium, celebrating a brilliant tournament with friends and family as well as a selection of the incredible staff who supported them on their journey.
We are incredibly proud to have played a part in the Lionesses incredible triumph and look forward to welcoming them back in the future.
