What is Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates combines similar movements to mat Pilates with specialist equipment, known as ‘the reformer ’, allowing for a more dynamic, targeted workout with ultimate precision. The origins of this unique apparatus date back to 1920 when pioneer Joseph Pilates invented the practice in aid of developing a new approach to exercise and body-conditioning during WW1. Over the past few decades, it has grown in popularity due to its diverse range of movements and benefits including posture, flexibility, stamina, and strength.
What is the reformer machine?
At first glance, the reformer may look a little intimidating to the untrained eye but is actually a simple and easy-to-use piece of exercise equipment. It consists of a bed-like frame, specifically designed with a system of springs and pulleys as a moving platform, allowing you to move dynamically – users are able to set resistance levels based on strength and personal fitness goals. There is also an adjustable foot bar complete with long straps, usually used by the legs and arms, and shoulder blocks to prevent the practitioner falling off during a workout.
Contrary to popular belief, this versatile machine can be operated by both complete beginners and certified Pilates gurus due to its ability to adapt the resistance levels based on users’ fitness levels and preference.
Here at The Lensbury, our new REFORM studio has the latest BASI reformer Pilates beds, ensuring you get the most from your exciting new workout!
What are the benefits of Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates boasts a wide range of benefits which practitioners can expect to see within a short amount of time including posture, flexibility, stamina and strength, alongside increased core-strength, improved balance, and a longer leaner body thanks to its unique and varied exercise method. It is also known as a form of rehabilitation following injury and can be used to alleviate back and neck pain. The benefits are truly endless!
